Software Update - Internet Explorer 7

The world of software updates is often full of unforeseen issues. Recently, Microsoft hailed the release of its new Internet Explorer program. You may have heard about different websites or user interfaces such as MLS systems or online banking systems not working properly in the new browser version. It is currently a very "hot" topic on the Internet.

As a client of Advanced Access, you may have noticed that the editors in the 3.0 platform (Page Manager, Free Reports), and the editor in our Intellicards program will no longer function correctly on this new browser. This is due to a change made in the new Internet Explorer. Quoting Microsoft release documents "The new Internet Explorer 7 ActiveX Opt-In feature disables ActiveX controls on a user's machine." Additionally, "Internet Explorer 7 disables Dynamic HTML (DHTML) scriptlets by default.Disabling scriptlets by default is done to deemphasize unsupported technology in Internet Explorer."

For those who have installed IE 7, there is a workaround that can be applied so the editors will work as they did on Internet Explorer 6.

Below is a step by step guide to using the Microsoft work around program "User Agent String Utility". If you prefer you still have the option to "roll back" to a fully functional 6.0 browser by removing the "Windows Internet Explorer 7" program via your "Add Remove Programs" found in your Windows Control Panel.

Remember if you run into any difficulties please contact our Customer Support department for assistance at 1-866-518-1571.

Part 1

1. Go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=70356 which will prompt you to download a file named "uasutility-v2-x86.msi". This is a relatively small file (about 0.17 MB), so you can simply save this to your Desktop.

2. Double-click the file and click 'Run' to start the installation process.

3. Click 'Next' three times.

4. Click 'Close'.

5. A shortcut will now appear on the Desktop labeled 'User Agent String Utility'. Double-click this icon to run the program.

6. Select the 'Just change my settings' option, and then click 'Change Settings'.

An instance of IE 7 emulating IE 6 will open. Using that window, you will be able to login to your Virtual Office to start making changes same as before. You will need to repeat steps 5 and 6 above each time you want to use one of the HTML editors, since IE 7 will otherwise always open as regular IE 7.

If you are still unable to use your Virtual Office editors (you will see a red X) continue to 'Part 2' below.

Part 2

1.Go to the Tools menu in the Internet Explorer window you have open

2. Select Internet options

3. Click on the Security Level tab

4. Click Custom Level

5. Scroll to the section for Active X controls and plugins

6. Select "Enable" for the first option and "Prompt" for the second option in that list, and then click "OK".

If at this point you see the toolbars for the editor, but no content, continue to 'Part 3' below.
