How Reciprocal
Linking BOOSTS
Your Site's Popularity
For the past year, we have included a
'Link Popularity Update' at the close of each weekly Marketing Tip.
Beginning in March of 2002, we looked for websites we thought would
be of interest to YOU, our valued clients. After the first three
weeks we were having so much fun exploring these different links
that we thought it should become a regular feature on the Marketing
Tips. Some sites we have found charge fees for you to link, and many
have been FREE. We just want you to be aware of all of them so you
can be armed with the tools you need to achieve the greatest
exposure on your website.
Remember, the reason link popularity
is so significant in your Internet strategy is because it can
dramatically increase traffic to your web site. Well-placed links
are an excellent source of consistent and targeted traffic. More
importantly these days, those links can even generate additional
search engine traffic to your Web site.
Here's an Introduction of some
basic, yet important, Internet Marketing concepts for our newer
clients who have just started receiving Marketing Tips…
What IS Link Popularity? If
this is the first you have ever heard of Link Popularity (and you're
not a new customer) it would be a good idea to start reading our
Marketing Tip each week! :) Links going to and from your website
have become more important than ever because the search directories
see them as an endorsement of your website by others. The
theory is: the more links "to" YOUR website, the more
important it must be, and therefore worthy of higher placement in
the search engines.
Links? What are links?
In the World Wide Web (the Internet),
a link is a reference to another document. Such links are sometimes
called "hot links" because they take you to other
documents when you click on them.
If a visitor is on your website, you
have numerous 'hot links' that direct your visitor to different
places on the Internet. So, in essence, you are linking to these
different places.
So, how do I get popular?
We all wish we were more popular! :-)
Back in elementary school it was easy… you were popular if your
mom baked cookies for your classroom. It's a little harder to be
popular on the Internet these days, but if you devote just a couple
of hours per week to work on it, using our guidelines, you will
begin to see results very quickly.
If you have a website and no one is
linking to you, that means (according to the search engines) that no
one finds your Web site important, or popular.
If you work diligently on asking for
reciprocal links, then the search engines will begin to recognize
that more and more websites are linking to you. The more websites
that link to you, the more popular you are! If your website is
popular, then it is worthy of higher placement in the search engines
for your relevant keywords.
A bit confusing, isn't it? And
this is just the condensed version.
In order to have many links pointing
to your Web site, in most cases you need to reciprocate. This means
you need to add the link that leads to THEIR website onto YOUR
website first. Once you have that link in place, you will then be
able to email the other website and ask them to put a link on THEIR
Web site to YOURS.
Here is a graphic that depicts how
Reciprocal Linking works:

The little guy in the middle is your
website. You can see he is pointing (linking) to the four different
websites spread out around him. Those websites, in turn, are linking
back to his website. This is called Reciprocal Linking.
How do you begin this process?
First, you have to find the site with
whom you would like to reciprocate. We suggest you start with our
list of suggested Link Popularity sites:
www.AdvancedAccess.com/findhelphere/re-sites.html
You can start with the free websites
and slowly move forward. Each week we have a new Link Popularity
partner featured (many times more than one!) and you will be able to
add new partners each week.
You can click on the links and they
will take you to detailed instructions.
Curious as to how Link Popularity
can help you? Ask Diane McCombs:
"I am starting my 3rd year
with my Advanced Access website and love it. I also go into the
Advanced Access Forums. I encourage everyone else with Advanced
Access sites to use the Forums.
It use to be just having a web
presence was enough, that's not true anymore. If you are not
continually adding new information on your website and doing link
exchanges you are probably not getting much business from your site.
Since I've started with the Advanced Access Forums I have learned
and shared with others, we are a super bunch of people from all over
the US. If I don't know how to do something I just post a question
and I will get help from a number of members and from AA support,
Brandon and Kristina. We all say there are no dumb questions, the
only dumb question is the one you don't ask.
The hits on my site have gone up
dramatically since I've started chatting in the forums. Last month
alone I had over 11,000 hits to my site. There are others in the
forums that receive many more hits. My business has increased
tremendously. I encourage everyone to join. Remember you will only
get what you give so give your website the attention it deserves.
I hope to see you there!
Diane McCombs
P.S. We even do referrals with
other members of the forum. Don't miss out!"
Next week we will review the
different formats you can have on your website. Stay tuned!
