Additional Domain Name Pointings - What you should know
Do you have more than one domain name (website address) pointed to your Advanced Access website? If so, you should know that the way in which any additional domain names are pointed can affect your search engine placement.
301 Redirects
When an additional domain name is pointed to a primary domain name, it can be set up as an alias (302 redirect) or with a 301 redirect.
When a pointing is set up as an alias it means that if someone types in the additional domain name, they will see the aliased domain name in their address bar not your primary domain name.
When a pointing is set up with a 301 redirect, this will allow someone to type in your additional domain name and be directed to your site. The difference is they will see your primary domain name in the address bar, not your additional name.
To redirect or not to redirect; that is the question...
At first glance, you may lean in the direction of not using the 301 redirect for marketing purposes for those to whom you advertised your additional name. However, it is important to note that without a 301 redirect in place for your additional domain names, search engines will view the additional name as a duplicate site at a different address. This is called duplicate content and is considered SPAMMING by search engines which is subject to a placement penalty.
If you are simply using your website in such a way that search engine placement is not a concern, then removing a 301 redirect is an option.
If search engine placement is a priority (which is the case for the vast majority) then a 301 redirect is simply a must.
How do I make sure I have my additional domains directed properly?
If you have added any additional domain names through Advanced Access, each of your additional domain names were automatically pointed using a 301 Redirect.
You can contact us to request that we remove an existing 301 redirect, although, we do recommend that the redirect remain in place for your own benefit. It is entirely up to your discretion.
To make an inquiry or request regarding a 301 redirect on your additional domain name(s) through Advanced Access, please click here to email Customer Support.
If you have additional domain names pointed through a different company such as your domain name registrar, you should login to your account or contact them to be sure that your additional domain names are pointed in the way you wish.
.INFO Domain Name Confusion?
Within the last year, our domain name registrar has run promotions for various domain names. One of which was a promotion to buy a .COM name and get the .INFO name for free for one year. Many people who used our registration services left the box next to the .INFO name checked, taking advantage of the promotion, thus
acquiring two names for the price of one.
We have seen many inquires lately that lead us to believe that many did not realize they were in
possession of an additional domain name. When you get a renewal notice for a .INFO name when your website is at a .COM, check to be sure you aren't using it in any capacity. If not, and you do not wish to retain the .INFO name, simply do not renew it. You will get the automatic emails reminding you to renew the .INFO name; those notices can be disregarded. However, if your .INFO name was
acquired as a result of this promotion, then your actual domain name (your .COM) is also up for renewal as well. It is important that you renew your .COM name if you have not already extended the registration in order to retain ownership of that name.
