Quality Link Partners... The Next Level

Continuing to work on your inbound links is an extremely important aspect of your search engine marketing campaign. Many times you will simply receive requests or emails directly to your email address from other websites asking to exchange links with you.

How can you tell if these sites are good or not?

First off, use your own skills to decide if you like the site or not. Go to their homepage, look at the site. Does it look interesting to you? Do you like it? Would you send a friend or family member to this site to ‘check it out’? If so, then it passed the first test! Many times this is the best test you can run. If you like the site, go ahead and add it and ask them to add your link back. Google wants you to add links to your site only if you like them. This is a natural process of the Internet and is the best way to ‘do things’.

There are a few more details to this process that would make this exchange of links good for enjoying positive search engine benefits.

If you have the Google Toolbar installed:
http://toolbar.google.com/

You will be able to see the PageRank for their homepage. Do they have any PageRank (“PR”)? That will let you know if they are a new site just starting off their link campaign or if they are ‘established’ or not. This process is simply giving you more information on if Google has recognized their site yet.

If it is a new site and does not have PR, don’t panic.  Your site was once new as well. If they passed your first test, then this may still be a good site to exchange links with.

Navigate to their links page. Go directly to the page where your link would be listed. Use your mouse to ‘right-click’ somewhere on the page. Make sure not to ‘right-click’ on an image but somewhere on an empty part of the page. You will get a box that pops up on your screen. The last option listed is ‘Properties’. Click on that option. It will then tell you the ‘Address (URL)’ of the page. Use your mouse to ‘highlight’ that full complete address and ‘right-click’ again to ‘Copy’ the address or use your keyword to hit CTRL+C to copy it.

Head over to Google.com and in the search box ‘paste’ (using your mouse or CTRL+V on your keyboard) the full address that you just copied. Then, hit the search button. This is searching Google’s database for that specific page.

Is the links page found or does Google not have any record of the page? If the links page is found then that means having your link on that page would most likely be a good thing. Google knows that the links page exists and if your link were on that page, Google would recognize that fact.

Also, while you still have the URL copied, view that actual page in your browser.  Once you have the Google Toolbar installed, you'll be able to see the PR for that specific page (where your link would be located).  If it is a good site, is indexed in Google and has Google PR, chances are the site will benefit you.

In the future, if you have any questions regarding the validity of a link partner, use these steps to check them out and just use your best judgment.

A note on "natural linking"...

If you think a site is great and really enjoy it, then link to the site anyway. All sites who have great PR had to build it up somehow.  Many authority sites become important to Google and other search engines because people linked to those sites simply because they were well liked and good resources.  Your users will probably enjoy sites like this as well and thank you for giving them a valuable resource to explore.  This is the natural way links work, and will make your site look more like it has a natural link structure as opposed to a site playing the "numbers game" with links.

.INFO Domain Name Confusion?

Within the last year, our domain name registrar has run promotions for various domain names. One of which was a promotion to buy a .COM name and get the .INFO name for free for one year. Many people who used our registration services left the box next to the .INFO name checked, taking advantage of the promotion, thus acquiring two names for the price of one.

We have seen many inquires lately that lead us to believe that many did not realize they were in possession of an additional domain name. When you get a renewal notice for a .INFO name when your website is at a .COM, check to be sure you aren't using it in any capacity. If not, and you do not wish to retain the .INFO name, simply do not renew it. You will get the automatic emails reminding you to renew the .INFO name; those notices can be disregarded. However, if your .INFO name was acquired as a result of this promotion, then your actual domain name (your .COM) is also up for renewal as well. It is important that you renew your .COM name if you have not already extended the registration in order to retain ownership of that name.
