Flattery Will Get You Everywhere

Flattery will get you everywhere. Giving praise is often neglected. When was the last time you took the time to call someone to thank them about a service they performed for you? Or, in this generation, emailed a nice testimonial?

A quick example from four years ago...

I was working on some problems regarding my house loan with the lending company so I called the Customer Service department for assistance. The woman I spoke to was very nice and was able to solve my problem. If I recall correctly, it was an extremely irritating problem. When I got off the phone, I composed a short email to their Info@ email address about how happy I was with 'Debbie', how wonderful she was to work with, and how much I liked their service. My regular signature was on my email. Ten minutes later I received a phone call from a VP to thank me for my email, ask for the last name of the rep, and asked my permission to post my testimonial on their website.

Now, that was simply a loan website so how can you use this strategy to your advantage with your local community?

Think about local businesses in your area to network with. How can you successfully approach them? Do you want to start off with a mutual referral relationship; reciprocal links? Or, are you looking to advertise on their website? That would most likely depend a lot on how their current website is structured.

These sorts of relationships are not only important to the success of your business (networking is a business survival tool) but they are also vital for the success of your website. We have been speaking a lot lately about the importance of quality links coming in and out of your website, and creating healthy partnerships will increase the chances of you being able to open the door for a meaningful link exchange.  If you need help finding businesses in your area that would be helpful to your website visitors check out our recent Marketing Tip on quality link resources.

When making contact, consider who will be receiving your email. Are you sending it to a business? Maybe you should phrase it with some sales questions to start off with, which would ensure that your email gets read. Let's say you are writing to a local moving company, you may wish to inquire about their days of business, any discounts available, if they provide boxes. Then, maybe follow it up with a nice compliment; maybe referencing a friend who used their services and were pleased. Then, bring up the fact that you have customers that you would love to refer and ask if they would be interested. You know that being in the sales business requires that you get your foot in the door. Hopefully they would respond to your polite email with more interest and you can continue the conversation.

No response to your email after a few days? Pick up the phone and give them a call! Follow your email as a guide and turn on the charm.

Does anyone have any more suggestions or ideas on how to build these relationships? We have a thread going in our Advanced Access Members Only Forum where you can get some additional ideas and even post your own.
