Spam Mail

Junk mail, spam, unwanted e-mail... Why do you receive it?  How do these advertisers get your e-mail address? And why does it multiply like crazy?

First tip - Learn to use the Delete Key.  The delete key is your friend!

When you first open an e-mail account, that's when the fun begins. If you have an e-mail account from AOL or free sources just as Yahoo or HotMail, those services can and will sell your e-mail address to other companies or individuals. HotMail is notorious for this type of practice. It's a free e-mail account, so what do you have to complain about? Your e-mail address is sold and days later you are the target of annoying and sometimes horrifying junk mail.  

If you have a private e-mail account that you received with your Internet Service Provider, you may be relatively safe. That is, until you start surfing the Internet and signing up for newsletters, chat groups, and buying items online. Be careful with what you sign up for. Be sure to read the small print and see what their privacy policy is.

Second tip - Don't email and ask to be removed. 

In most cases replying to the spammer will just confirm that your e-mail address is active. If you reply to their e-mail, you're telling the company that someone is reading their e-mail and they will consider your e-mail address to be even more valuable. Please be assured there are reputable companies that WILL remove you from their lists. The companies who are willing to remove you from their lists are usually sources where you had to sign up in the first place.

Third tip - Investigate different ways to deal with spam.

Unfortunately, as a Website owner, you are a good source of information for e-mail spammers. How? Your domain name record. When you purchased your domain name your e-mail is now a matter of public record. Spiders (little robots roaming the Internet) can go through these records and easily record your e-mail address. 

When companies prepare their Bulk Mailing program to sending e-mail, it will look up the MX record of your domain name and send you e-mail through the domain registration service.
