Getting Trustworthy Inbound Links

March 23rd, 2007 by Audrey

A really effective way to get good rankings in the search engines is by getting strong inbound links to your website. Obviously, some links are stronger than others, which means that they are worth more as far as the search engines are concerned. A good example of this are websites that have the .edu or .gov extension. Getting links from these kinds of sites is not easy, I will be honest. However, if you can get links of this nature, you will definitly reap the benefits.

How do you find these kinds of sites?

The first thing you want to keep in mind is that you will need to find the kind of sites that are actually willing to give links out. This is somewhat of a rarity because these types of sites do not really need your help (reciprocal link). I would suggest that you start by visiting the website of your local chamber of commerce or city hall. They usually have directories of all of the city/governement websites, which is a good place to start. Visit all of the sites you can find that are linking to the chamber of commerce or city hall website and see if you can’t get a link from them as well!

How do you go about obtaining these links?

You’ll want to take the list of websites you were able to find that are actually linking out and send them a very nice, courteous email. Let them know what it is that you like about their website and why you would like for them to link out to you. Be honest and let them know your motives! Not everyone is going to say yes, in fact, most people will say no. However, there will be that small percentage of people who actually agree though and that will make it all worth while.

If you don’t get a response to your email, try following it up with a phone call a week or so later. Again, no one ever said this was going to be easy. But getting inbound links is all about quality, NOT quantity, so practices like this are not only necessary, but extremely helpful to your marketing efforts.
