Social Media: Significant Traffic Source
December 22nd, 2008 by AnnaMatt Cutts (of Google fame) posted some info from his 2008 web statistics today. I know you may not be fascinated by stats, but his data is very telling about the power of social media and its ability to drive traffic to your site and blog.
Matt remarked:
Google and direct visits were a large fraction of my traffic, but so were sites such as Digg, StumbleUpon, Google Image Search, Techmeme, delicious, and Twitter. It’s a good reminder that social media sites and places like image search can drive quite a bit of traffic.
If I haven’t said it enough, there are several ways you can benefit from social media and participation in the online community. If you needed some numbers to back that up, check out Matt’s post to see the table showing his traffic sources.
I would also like to add that the same can be said for this blog.
Traffic Sources for Advanced Access Blog:
#1 - Direct traffic (type-in)
#2 - Google organic
#3 - Stumble Upon
Much of getting stuff onto Stumble Upon was via other social media outlets, such as Twitter and Facebook.

I have not tried Twitter of Stumble Upon, but sharing information, ideas and helping others with their thoughts, questions and ideas has definitely increased traffic to my own sites. It’s also kind of neat to look at the backlinks as they grow.
