Tips on Real Estate Web Design, Marketing, and Search Engines

I’m a REALTOR®, Not a Writer

January 14th, 2009 by Mike Wilton

We hate to beat a dead horse, but it can’t be stressed enough how important content is.  We’ve reiterated that content is king time and time again and there’s a reason.  If there’s one thing that hasn’t changed throughout the existence of search engines, it’s the value of content on your website.  Furthermore, how do you set yourself apart from your competition when you have nothing original to offer?  So here we are again, in 2009, telling you to write content.

Where to Start

Your home page is the first page that most of your visitors will come to when visiting your site, so it only makes sense to start there.  From there you can move on to your about page, testimonials page, and eventually develop pages for the areas you serve.  When developing your home page content you want to do two things, explain to your visitors what you and your site have to offer and provide them with information relevant to the areas you service.

Since your home page is the gateway to the rest of your site you do not need to go into too much detail on this page.  Usually just a few paragraphs of content about your services and your areas of focus are sufficient.  By being brief you allow room to expand on the topics on internal pages.

Know Your Audience and Be Original

As you begin to write content for your website it’s important to remember to write for your visitors and not for the search engines.  You want to convey the fact that you are an expert in your field and in the areas you serve; and while keywords are important to your content it’s important to include them in a natural matter.  Do not stuff your home page content with your keywords in hopes of better search rankings.  This can hurt your rankings for one, but it will also make it harder for visitors to read.

Another thing to remember when starting out is that while you may need to use outside sources to develop you content, it’s never a good idea to just copy and paste content from another website.  First, it’s stealing and second it’s not original and therefore of no real value to your visitors or the search engines.

You Have No Time to Waste

As a real estate professional, you play each role within a normal business; you are your marketing person, your PR person, your copywriter, your web designer, and so much more.  As the web continues to evolve, people are finding more ways to obtain information than ever. If you cannot provide the information consumers are looking for, another real estate website, blog, or portal will.  Homebuyers and sellers are becoming more proficient online, and many who will become your clients have grown up using the internet.  Technology is advancing and with it comes the demand for savvy business people who can provide reliable services both online and offline.  Building up the content on your website is simply the foundation for all other facets of your online presence.

If you don’t have time to create content, make time!  If you don’t your competition will and your site will suffer because of it.  If you still do not feel you have time to write, Advanced Access offers the TypeWriter service that provides you with a page of content for your website written by one of our expert website marketing specialists.
