Seeing the Forest for the Trees - Optimizing your Interior Pages
This is the first in a series of four articles that will help you increase your Search Engine Optimization
When thinking about your website, do you want your visitors to simply visit your homepage and then leave or would you rather they spend time paying attention to your interior pages as well? Knowing that the interior pages of your website are so important, you should be taking proper time to ensure that you’re giving those pages the same amount of care and attention that you do with your homepage.
You may be surprised by the large number of website owners who spend all of their time making sure that their homepage is perfect and giving little to no thought to their interior pages. While I admit that your website is much like real life in the sense that you only get one chance to make a first impression, I also believe that beauty is only skin deep. Having an attractive homepage is nice, but having out-dated, cluttered or unattractive interior pages can mean the difference between making a lead and having a visitor turn around to leave your site.
Working on your interior pages can help your visitors find what they need on your site, thus making the decision to work with you that much easier. Some key elements to consider:
- Meta-tags
- Customizing your Meta Tags so that they are targeted for the page can help your overall website, as well as the interior page itself, to rank in the search engines
- Navigation
- Give them what they need. Do you have buttons in your interior Nav bar that are just taking up Real Estate? Any unnecessary buttons should be removed from the Nav bar so that your most important pages are easily found.
- Building a sitemap so that the search engines can easily find the pages of your site is an important step. Don’t forget to add links to your new pages as you create them!
- Content
- Be sure that your content is as direct as possible when it comes to the intent of the page. Are you looking to showcase a certain area/property? You’ll want to have as much targeted information as possible. Writing a page about an entire county? Provide a lot of general info while carefully maintaining a balance with your keywords.
- If we’ve said it before, we’ve said it a thousand times; Original content is imperative. Having original content establishes you as an authority with the search engines and also provides your visitors with a 100% realistic look at you and your services.
Optimizing your interior pages will be beneficial to the overall ranking of your site and your business. Spend a little extra time working on those pages and you just may find that your visitors will spend a little extra time reading them!
