Are You Keeping An Eye On Your Neighborhood?

Many times we hear clients in our forums talking about their placement in the search engines and how they are faring against their competitors. This got me thinking about the website owners who are occupying the top spots in the search results; do they pay attention to who is ranking beneath them?

It would appear that many of the top rankers are not entirely worried about the “up and comers” for their keywords. I don’t know about you, but I would be interested in a new person who moved in on my block, because you never know who is going to be a problem for you.

That new family may throw a lot of parties or love to mow their lawn first thing Saturday mornings. New to the neighborhood or not, you should always be aware of who is occupying the space that surrounds you.

A newer website may not have established authority on the internet yet, but they might be implementing a genius new strategy that you have not thought of yet. When they eventually get the credit they deserve and start to rank competitively, will your website be able to stand against them? Staying on top of what your competitors are doing online will help to ensure that you are always on par with offering every convenience a user may want or need when they visit your website.

Internet Word of the Day
netiquette   \NET-ih-kut\   noun: etiquette governing communication on the Internet

Example sentence:
"On the end-user side, unsolicited e-mail advertising has long been considered a breach of netiquette." (Al Bredenberg, _Internet World_, July 1996)

Did you know?
When the first computer networks were being developed in the 1950s and 60s, few people could have predicted the extent to which the Internet would revolutionize our culture -- and our language. These days, you don't have to be a "computernik" (a computer expert or enthusiast) or a "mouse potato" (someone who spends a great deal of time using a computer) to be familiar with words like "blog," "download," or the verb "google." And even "computerphobes" are likely to know that in modern jargon, a "mouse" isn't necessarily a small furry rodent and the newest "virus" may be more of a threat to your computer than to your health. "Netiquette," a blend of "net" (as in "Internet") and "etiquette," joined our language in the late 1980s.
