Search Engine Update

The past three weeks we have gone over what link popularity is, how to get popular, how to begin the process, and how to exchange links with someone, how to participate in our Weekly Marketing Tips, and how to make it easy to talk to people about reciprocal linking. Working on your reciprocal links will help your website place higher in the search engines for the chosen keywords for which your site is optimized.

Over the past few years, many of the search engines have moved to paid placement models. As the Search Engines change frequently, we find our clients benefit by periodic reviews of the latest trends and services. The following is a review of the major search engines:

Google

GoogleAds have gained in popularity because Google is such a powerful search engine. The GoogleAds also show up while searching on AOL, CompuServe, Netscape, Ask Jeeves, AT&T Worldnet, EarthLink, and Excite, which makes this a great opportunity.

OverTure

OverTure has one of the best paid placement services available on the Internet. We highly recommend signing up for this service. With Overture, it's simple math - you can pay to be placed higher in the search engines. Open bidding on keywords and tight relevancy standards produce significant results. Bids for OverTure begin at ten cents ($0.10) per keyword. The price per keyword depends upon the demand in the area. Immediately following the paid placement links, Overture features Inktomi results in their listings. (For additional information about Inktomi, see below.) 

When you bid for keywords through Overture, your paid listings will also appear on other major search engines, including Yahoo, AltaVista, InfoSpace, AllTheWeb, Lycos, MSN, CNet, and NetZero.

Yahoo

Yahoo is the Internet's most popular website directory and enjoys a well-deserved reputation for helping people find information easily. The secret to Yahoo's success is human beings. As the largest human-compiled guide to the web, Yahoo employs about 150 editors in an effort to categorize the Internet. Yahoo also supplements its results with those from Google. If a search fails to find a match within Yahoo's own listings, then matches from Google are displayed. Google matches also appear after all Yahoo matches have first been shown. Yahoo is the oldest major web site directory, having launched in late 1994.

Inktomi

With over one billion listings and 80 million searches per day Inktomi represents a huge portion of the Search Engine market. Also, in March of 2003, Yahoo purchased Inktomi and the search engine world is looking to see what further developments will be made in this search engine. 

With Inktomi, your website will be easy to find as their search results can be found in MSN, About, eSpotting.com, Overture, LookSmart, Goo, Terra, ICQ, and Mobil.com.

We HIGHLY suggest submitting your website to Inktomi. Inktomi is extremely cost effective for a yearly fee of $39.95.

LookSmart

LookSmart recently introduced a change in their directory. Previously, LookSmart charged a one-time fee of $299.00 to be included in their database. They have now shifted to a model where most new listings in the commercial portions of its directory will be sold on a cost-per-click basis. Every time your site is clicked on, you will pay a fee of fifteen cents ($0.15.) You can set up realistic monthly budgets for this type of system. 

Listings from LookSmart also appear on MSN, About, RoadRunner, Inktomi, CNet, and InfoSpace.

AskJeeves/Teoma

Ask Jeeves began in 1996, at time when the Internet was in its infancy. Since that time, Ask Jeeves has grown to become a popular search engine, answering millions of queries each day. For $30.00 a year you can be included in the AskJeeves/Teoma search engine.
